SALLY GALL CRAWL MAY 13 - JUNE 28, 200 Julie Saul Gallery is pleased to announce our tenth solo exhibition with Sally Gall during our 23 years of representation. The works in Crawl were made during the spring and fall of 2007 and comprise her second body of color photographs. Gall's work has always been about the sensual experience of being in the natural world, a world that encompasses wilderness and also cultivated nature. Her vision seeks the subtle shift between representation and abstraction, between the deep space of a landscape and the flat plane of a two dimensional photograph. Building on a body of work that explores phenomena found in nature with her singular sense of observation, Sally Gall presents a new series of photographs that further investigates the natural world. The artist again asks viewers to immerse themselves in an environment that is both unfamiliar and unknown (one thinks, for example, of her dark and haunting cave photographs). In this series, her focus is on the world of insects that live and prosper in grasses. As in the caves, viewers are drawn into a place of mystery and beauty that until now has rarely been considered. In these images, Gall gives us a snail's eye view of the busy proceedings of the vast living world beneath our feet-- it is a brash and beautiful universe that bursts with life and eventfulness. Foreground and background seem to shift before our eyes, and in some photographs, play the minutiae of nature against broad areas of color (grasses) that we read as abstract fields. Sally Gall has described this project with the following reflections: "Infants know this world for a time. Picnickers and soldiers glimpse it. There is no more dynamic stage of life and death on earth than the first few inches above its surface. This is where prairies and forests are born. Here is where the bulk of our food comes from and where all earthly creatures return when our lives are finished. Comforting, beautiful, frightening, and strange--this is the terrestrial world. And it can only be discovered and known intimately on hands and knees." Sally Gall received a BFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1978. She has taught and lectured extensively in the United States and Europe. Public collections include the Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and Hood Museum at Dartmouth College and many others. top For additional information contact the gallery back |
