Sally Gall
A Survey: 1980-2005

Celebrating 20 years with the gallery
September 9 - October 15, 2005
Reception for the artist, Friday, September 9, 6-8 p.m.

This exhibition marks Sally Gall's twentieth year and eighth solo exhibition with the Julie Saul Gallery. The show will include over twenty-five works, representing as many years. Gall is recognized as a landscape artist who combines rigorous formalism with luscious sensuality, with a particular emphasis on recording human interactions with nature.

The survey includes examples from all of Gall's previous exhibitions at the gallery, beginning with a series of small prints of formal gardens photographed with a Diana camera which were included in Gall's first exhibition in 1986, and concludes with two recent seascapes in color. Other past projects represented in the show include "Between Worlds", photographs made in Bequi during an eight week sojourn at a remote artists' colony in 1998, and "Subterranea" (2000 and 2003), an extensive series of underground landscapes which explore the "twilight zone" between daylight and darkness. Although Gall has photographed many parts of the world, the specific location is not as important to her as the experience, the sensuality and the expression of suspended time.

Sally Gall received a BFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1978. She has taught and lectured extensively in the United States and Europe. Gall's work is included in numerous public collections including the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Addison Gallery in Andover and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Both of her monographs; Water's Edge and Subterranea will be available for sale at the exhibition.
