Press Release Checklist Sally Gall Subterranea January 16 - February 22, 2003 The Julie Saul Gallery is pleased to announce our fifth solo exhibition of new work by Sally Gall which is being held in conjunction with the publication of her second monograph- Subterranea. The exhibition will include nine, large-scale, black-and-white prints which represent the culmination of a three-year project photographing in caves, lava tubes, ancient aqueducts and quarries. An expanded version of our show which includes work from her 2000 exhibition entitled Into Darkness will travel to six galleries around the United States over the next two years. Sally Gall is well known for her evocative landscape photographs which she has been creating and exhibiting for twenty-five years. Her landscape subjects have ranged from formal gardens to idyllic, cultivated terrain and threatening and dramatic wilds. "However, her discovery of and interest in the interior landscape, a subject matter that few photographers have explored, came to her by accident while ducking into a cave for shelter during a rainstorm in the jungle near Vera Cruz, Mexico." She says, "that is when I began to comprehend that I had left the horizon behind and entered the inner outdoors, where known boundaries disappear and night and day somehow manage to coexist." Recognizing this as a subject that would present enormous possibilities and great technical challenges, she sought out sites in Thailand, Mexico, Belize, France, Italy and California. She has embraced her subject and says: "inside the earth I have found correlatives for the human inner scape of emotion and experience...I have discovered for myself and I hope others, the substance of darkness in Subterranea's internal landscape." Sally Gall has lived in New York since 1984, and exhibits regularly in gallery and museum shows. Her work is included in numerous public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Hood Museum at Dartmouth College, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. She has taught workshops internationally and participated in artist residency programs at, among others, the Mac Dowell Artists Colony, and the Rockefeller Foundation Residency, Bellagio, Italy. The monograph is published by Umbrage Editions and includes 36 duotone reproductions and a foreword by Mark Strand. Images: In order of check list below.
