Luigi Ghirri
Come pensare per immagini... "Thinking through images: color photographs from the 1970s

October 14- November 24, 1999

The Julie Saul Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of photographs by Luigi Ghirri, our first exhibition of his work. We are also pleased to be the sole representatives of his vintage and estate prints in the United States.

Luigi Ghirri (1943-1992) was perhaps the leading artist /photographer in Italy during his brief, prematurely curtailed career. Born in Reggio Emilia and educated in Modena, Ghirri created visually profound images about the nature of representation and seeing. Although he freely acknowledged the influence of American photographers Lee Friedlander, Walker Evans, and William Eggleston as well as Atget, his work possesses a poetic yet witty sensibility that is purely his own. His images derived from maps and popular culture are often reminiscent of Sigmar Pohlke during the â70s. During the first decade he photographed, he pursued his own personal work, and later in the 1980s, he also became the major chronicler of the landscape and architecture of central Italy where he spent his life. He is known particularly for his collaborations with Aldo Rossi. Ghirri exhibited in the U.S. at the Light Gallery in 1980 and more recently at Casa Italia at New York University. Although more than twenty books have been published in Italy and France on Ghirri's work, there are no monographs published in English.

Our show will include mainly work from the 1970s from the series Kodachrome, Dejeuner sur l'herbe, and Atlas. Ghirri worked exclusively in color, and the modern prints in this show are all made on archival paper by the printer he worked with during his lifetime.

This exhibition is part of a fall citywide festival of Italian Photography entitled FOCUS ON ITALY 1999 organized by the Friends of Studio Marangoni for further information please call 696-4052
