BILL JACOBSON
Photographs

January 27- March 10, 2001
Reception for the artist: Saturday, January 27, 6-8 PM

The Julie Saul Gallery is pleased to announce our fourth solo exhibition of new photographs by Bill Jacobson. Jacobson's new work is a departure from the primarily figurative and portrait work he has created over the past decade, both formally and in its subject matter. The eight large color photographs which were all made within the last year, represent New York street scenes, and prove Jacobson to be a rich and subtle colorist. Jacobson's dreamy and timeless musings on the life of the street combine his aesthetic vision and blurred technique to present the city more as we emotionally experience it than as it appears. Jacobson feels that although this new work appears a departure from his earlier concerns, the spirit of poignant observation that he brought to his black and white figurative work is maintained. He depicts the transient and fluxuating experience of our anonymous passage through the city as a metaphor for forgotten moments and the universal connectedness of humanity.

Jacobson has exhibited widely in museums and galleries over the last decade. Most recently he had a solo show at The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu and is included in "Secret Victorians" at The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia and ¸ Chorus of Light: Photographs from the Sir Elton John Collection” at The High Museum of Art in Atlanta.

His work is included in numerous public and museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Hallmark Collection, The Armand Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, The Princeton University Art Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The New York Public Library, and many others.

During the month of February we will be participating in two art fairs in New York, the Photography Fair of AIPAD, February 15-18, and The Armory Show, February 21-26.
