WHO: Born Into Brothels co-directors Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski, Julie Saul, curator and owner of the Julie Saul Gallery and Kids with Cameras.

WHAT: A SPECIAL EVENING TO BENEFIT KIDS WITH CAMERAS WITH EXHIBITION OPENING OF CHILDREN’S WORK AND EXCLUSIVE AUCTION BY WORLD LEADING PHOTOGRAPHERS INCLUDING PAUL ELLEDGE, AMY ARBUS, MAGGIE STEBER, ANDREW ECCLES, GREG GORMAN AND MANY MORE.

A tribute to the resiliency of childhood and the restorative power of art, Oscar® winner BORN INTO BROTHELS is a portrait of several unforgettable children who live in the red light district of Calcutta where their mothers work as prostitutes. Spurred by the kids’ fascination with her camera, Zana Briski (a New York-based photographer) gave each of the children a camera and taught them to look at the world through new eyes. Their images are explosions of color: self-portraits, family pictures, street scenes and stunning tableaus of Bengali life.

“The photographs form a close, ravishing, sometimes wrenching exhibition…nearly all the images are amazing in one way or another as documents, artifacts or artworks…it is hard to separate the photographs from the aura of their story, and the determination and hope they reflect…Documenting a little seen world with the grace and intimacy, and infused with the thrill of discovery, they manifest the wonderful availability of photography and the healing power of art.”- NEW YORK TIMES.

Benefit Tickets will go on sale Monday, October 3rd. Tickets are $75 and are available at www.kids-with-cameras.org. The ticket fee can be applied toward a print purchase and includes the film soundtrack. Tickets can also be purchased by mail by sending your check made payable to ‘Kids with Cameras’, including “Oct. 18 Benefit” in check note area, and mailing to: Kids with Cameras, 341 Lafayette Street Suite 4407, New York, NY 10012.
