Press Release Checklist Neeta Madahar Sustenance April 28 - June 11, 2005 In the second gallery we will present a selection of large Iris prints by Neeta Madahar in her first New York exhibition from her series entitled Sustenance. For over a year Madahar recorded the feeding activity of birds as observed from her balcony in an apartment complex in Framingham, MA. She used this project to explore issues of home, migration and belonging. The photographs record the feeding of the birds over all the seasons, underlining the theme of habit, change and consistency. The photographs have a "dioramic" quality due to her use of a large format camera and flash. Madahar says "it is difficult to resist projecting human behavior and characteristics on these creatures. The Sustenance photographs attempt to articulate that revelatory experiences, both subtle and dramatic, can occur through obsessive concentration on a task." Madahar received her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She lives between Boston and the UK, and this work has been shown at the 2004 Arles Festival, the Carpenter Center at Harvard and is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Fogg Art Museum and will be published in the May issue of Aperture Magazine.
