Tanya Marcuse
Bountiful

We are pleased to announce our second exhibition of new work by Tanya Marcuse in our second gallery. Bountiful is a series of color photographs of wax agricultural models stored at the Agricultural Experiment Station Library in Geneva, NY. The models were commissioned by Cornell University about 100 years ago and were made almost entirely by one man, John Lawson. He even included his own body hair in the models, for the fibers of carrots and radishes. The Bountiful project is partly about Americana, but also about the existential desire to make representations of things that cannot last. Marcuse says of the project: "I love the humble ambitions of the models -to teach about agriculture and have three-dimensional, life-like models to use year round. But the names of specimens inscribed on the original matte supports: Refugee, 100% Profit, Bountiful, Normal Plant, Perfection, somehow pull them to another place and become lyrical or ironic accompaniments to the objects."

Marcuse was recently featured in the ICP second triennial “Dress Codes” with a selection of works from her Underwear and Armor series. This series along with Fruitless shown here 2007 have both been published by Nazraeli Press. Marcuse graduated from Yale’s MFA program in Photography in 1990 and among several awards received a Guggenheim fellowship in 2002/3. Here work is featured in numerous public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Yale Art Gallery, and the Corcoran Museum of Art.
