John O'Reilly
A Worcester Odyssey

May 27 - July 2, 2004

The Julie Saul Gallery is pleased to announce our fifth solo exhibition of photomontages by John O'Reilly. The exhibition entitled, "A Worcester Odyssey", introduces a dramatic change in O'Reilly's work of the last decade to a panoramic format, less abstract than work of the recent past. This series was inspired by a group of ten photo albums that O'Reilly acquired several years ago which portrayed the life of a local resident named Donald. O'Reilly used this "everyman" figure as the protagonist on an imaginary journey which led to the creation of a local odyssey. Donald can be seen as a modern Ulysses, as a tourist witness to Ulysses' adventures, or as an actor surrogate for O'Reilly himself.

These photomontages are a mixture of outdoor shots of the local Worcester area, O'Reilly's home and studio set-ups. The panoramic style lends itself to the wandering of the tale and into a narrative reading. It allows for abrupt changes in spatial depth, music-like movements and time-place warps. Artists, their workplaces, and depictions of myths are all referred to in many of the works. O'Reilly's collection of vernacular and studio portraits also become protagonists in the journey.

O'Reilly had a retrospective at the Addison Gallery of American Art in fall 2002, which was accompanied by a monograph written by Klaus Kertess. He has been written about and exhibited widely, and his work is included many public collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the New York Public Library, the Princeton University Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, the Rose Art Museum (Brandeiss) and the Fogg Art Museum (Harvard) in Boston, and many others. A full CV is available on our website- www.saulgallery.com.

"Blind Spot" magazine will publish a portfolio of images form the "Worcester Odyssey" series in their next issue to be released in July.
