Press Release Checklist PANIC July 12 - August 17, 2001 Opening reception, Thursday, July 12, 5-7 pm Curated by Dan Cooney Panic: a sudden and overwhelming fear producing hysterical behavior that can spread through a crowd. The Julie Saul Gallery announces Panic, a multi media exhibition of photography, video and drawing. Through the work of ten artists the show is a visualization of the moment that panic erupts. By using the ability of photography to capture a moment, the ability of video to record and animate and the ability of drawing to create a scenario, the show will integrate the real and staged moment of panic. Panic will also investigate the artists' desire to stage that powerful moment and interpret the viewer's connection to it. Panic includes elements of performance and body art, the directorial mode of photography, accidental and animated events in video and drawings that range from the diaristic to caricature. Every piece in the exhibition is a staged or created scenario that varies aesthetically and conceptually. The common thread that each work shares is the expression of a burst of emotional intensity and physical response. David Wojnarowicz's Untitled (Buffaloes) photograph is the inspiration for the exhibition. Karen Yasinsky, in addition to her drawings of airplane interiors will debut an animated video piece called Condition Red which creates a sense of anticipated doom for the passengers of a jetliner. Sam Easterson's A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing is an innocent look at a day in the life of a sheep that results in a stampeding herd of frightened sheep. Ida Applebroog and R. Crumb each recreate panic in their unique and angst-charged drawings. Claude Wampler's self portrait is an LCD screen that features an unsettling composition of the artist's face and Christmas tree lights. Patty Chang, Stephen Frailey, Nic Nicosia, and Andrea Shaker all create scenes in which psychological dramas are played out for the camera.
