Second Gallery
Paul Shambroom
More Meetings
October 21 - December 4, 2004
Opening Reception and Book Signing: Thursday, October 21, 6 to 8 p.m.

We are pleased to announce a second exhibition featuring new works from Paul Shambroom's Meetings project, first exhibited here in September 2002. This show is organized to correspond with the publication of the monograph Meetings by Chris Boot publishers in London. Shambroom will be present for the reception and booksigning. The book brings together 40 color plates photographed between 1999 and 2003, and is the culmination of the most recent cycle of projects about power in American culture. His previous series concluded with the book Face to Face with the Bomb: Nuclear Reality after the Cold War.

During this four year long project, Shambroom photographed the participants and the rituals of civic power, concentrating on the governing boards in small towns of 2000 people or less. The prints are presented as large scale digital ink prints on canvas, stretched and varnished, breaking down boundaries between photography and oil painting. Seven new images from the Meetings series (two large prints on canvas and five smaller images on paper) comprise the exhibition.

The Meetings series has been shown widely since it was first exhibited here in 2002- most recently in its entirety in Arles, France at the annual festival which was curated this year by Martin Parr. Survey shows have also been mounted in Montreal as part of their month of photography in 2003 and at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago. Works from the Meeting series have been acquired by numerous institutions and important collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Harvard Business School.

On Wednesday October 20 Shambroom with host a "Virtual Town Meeting" at the Apple Store in Soho (103 Prince Street.) Political bloggers and photobloggers will share their work. The event is free and open to the public from 6:30-8:00PM and the event will be web cast on the Internet. For more information see www.apple.com/retail/soho/.
