Paul Shambroom
Security
March 30-May 13, 2006
Opening Reception: Thursday, March 30, 6 to 8 p.m.

Shambroom's new body of work titled Security examines issues of fear, safety and liberty in post 9/11 America. It brings together elements of democratic processes and restricted access from his previous series Nuclear Weapons and Meetings (shown here in 2002.) Over the last two years he has photographed official training facilities, equipment and personnel involved in the massive government and private sector efforts to prepare for and respond to terrorist attacks within the nation's borders.

Four large portraits of emergency workers standing in the landscape dressed in their full gear comprise one aspect of the show. They are posed to suggest the European tradition of elegant full-length portraits of nobility. The portraits are varnished inkjet prints on stretched canvas, which further emphases their connection to historical portraiture.

A series of straight color prints document other aspects of security training and testing including explosives demonstrations, SWAT, search and rescue, and hazardous material response teams. Altogether, this work addresses the increasingly complex relationship between the U.S. government and its citizens, and the tangible effects of international events on Americans' day-to-day lives, personal freedoms, and sense of security.

Shambroom lives and works in Minneapolis and has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe. The Meetings series had nine solo exhibitions. A mid-career survey exhibition with full catalog is being organized by a three museum consortium (Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Weisman Art Museum, Univ. of Minnesota, Minneapolis, University Art Museum, Cal. State, Long Beach) and was recently awarded support by the Warhol Foundation. His work is included in numerous museum collections including the Whitney which also featured him in the 1997 Biennial, The Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Walker Art Center.
