Press Release Checklist David Stephenson Heaven January 20- February 26, 2000 The Julie Saul Gallery is pleased to announce the second solo exhibition of large scale photographs by David Stephenson. The exhibition will include two bodies of work which are visually and conceptually linked. The color photographs of domes and cupolas are a continuation of an extensive project Stephenson began in Italy during 1996. He has continued photographing architecture throughout Europe and Turkey. The exhibition will emphasize the geometric, non figurative crystalline forms of Spanish and Islamic influenced architecture. Also featured in the exhibition are cibachrome color and black and white images of stars in the night sky above Tasmania, Australia where Stephenson lives. The photographs are executed with intermittent and extensive exposure times while rotating the camera. The effect of this technical manipulation combined with the simplicity of the landscape is a unique and evocative image of domed geometric patterns. Stephenson heads the photography department at the Tasmanian School of Art in Hobart. Last year he was given a solo survey show at the National Gallery of Victoria. Among many collections, his work is included in that of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the San Francisco Musuem of Modern Art, the Bibliotheque National, Paris, the Hallmark Collection, Kansas City, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the National Gallery Australia, Canberra.
