Iain Stewart
Land/Sea/Sky
March 16- April 23

Iain Stewart will have his first solo exhibition in New York in our second gallery. Stewart lives and works in Scotland, and is represented in London by The Photographer's Gallery. His work was first shown here in 1998 in our group exhibition entitled "Thin Air: Minimalism in Contemporary Photography". Stewart's photographs are quiet and ethereal, and are ultimately about light and atmosphere. They are not about information, but expressing a feeling. The vocabulary used to discuss abstract painting is probably most useful in describing Stewarts' work. However, one must keep in mind that these were made in nature and not in the studio. Several of the works in this show are presented as diptychs and triptychs- representing slight shifts in time from one image to the next. Others are single images in a large scale.

Stewart's work is in the collection of many museums, including the Edinburgh Art Gallery, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. A portfolio of Land/Sea/Sky has recently been published of Stewart's work and will be available for viewing.
