Philip Trager
Changing Paris: A Tour Along the Seine

May 25- June 30, 2000
Reception and book signing : Thursday, May 35, 6 - 8 PM

Julie Saul Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of selected prints from Philip Trager's new book "Changing Paris: A Tour Along the Seine", published by Arena editions. Our exhibition will include over 30 images (in both silver print and platinum mediums) chosen from the 64 plates in the book. A selection of additional prints will be shown concurrently at the Maison Francaise, New York University, 16 Washington Mews, at University Place (May 9- June 30.)

For almost six years Trager worked tirelessly photographing Paris along the course of the Seine, documenting the remarkable constructions and spaces of the magnificent city, which has historically used the river as a point of reference in its architecture. Laboring with a large format camera, like his forebears Gustave Le Gray, Eugene Atget, and Berenice Abbott (whom the title of the book and exhibition quotes), Trager has captured the enormous changes and timelessness of the Parisian urban environment. His eloquent and luminous views and observations seem effortless, and do not belie the labor of framing and recording these breathtaking vistas and intimate views.

Among the structures and sites that Trager photographs are the "Grands Projects," as well as the Place de la Concorde, the Musee d'art Moderne, the Tour Eifel, and many gardens and bridges. The book includes essays by Pierre Borhan and Diane Johnson, while architectural historian Thomas Mellins has provided notes on the history and significance of the structures.

Trager is well known for photographic projects ranging from architecture to dance. This is his seventh book; previous publications include "Philip Trager: New York" (1980) "The Villas of Palladio" (1986), and "Dancers" (1992). Trager's work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan and Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, and Canadian Centre for Architecture.

A discussion between Philip Trager and Thomas Mellins on the Changing Paris project will take place on Wednesday, May 31st, 6:30 PM at La Maison Francaise. This is a free public program- call 998-8750 for reservations.
