Press Release Checklist Sally Gall Water's Edge An exhibition in honor of the publication of a monograph surveying seventeen years of photographs April 19 - May 20, 1995 The Julie Saul Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition and book signing event for Sally Gall. This will be the fourth solo exhibition of Gall's work at the Saul Gallery. Black and white photographs in the exhibition will be selected from the images in her new monograph entitled The Water's Edge. Packaged by Umbra Editions, and published by Chronicle Books in San Francisco, Gall's first monograph presents a magnificent selection of landscape photographs spanning seventeen years. The landscape sites range from Brazil to Indonesia, New England to Hawaii. All are unified by Sally Gall's transforming vision of nature. She presents a world heartbreakingly beautiful but at the same time completely fabricated--reminding us gently that there is really no such thing as natural beauty. Lushly material, almost sexual, her pictures seduce the spectator just as devotional paintings do...Justin Spring, Artforum, 1993. An essay by novelist James Salter accompanies the work. Some of the images in the exhibition have never been exhibited, and others, such as Loire and Tampaksiring have been exhibited and published widely. The Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona Beach, Florida is also holding a solo exhibition of Gall's work drawn from the book through June 15. That exhibition is available through the museum on a loan basis. Gall's work has been exhibited and published widely. Solo museum exhibition venues include the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Contemporary Art Museum in Houston. Her editorial work has appeared widely in such publications as The New York Times Magazine, Travel and Leisure, Travel/Holiday, Vogue, Esquire, and New York Magazine. Very favorable critical reviews have appeared in Artforum and Art News magazines as well as The Village Voice and The New York Times. The book, which retails for $25.00 and is hardcover, will be available for sale at the opening reception. Ms. Gall will be on hand to sign copies, and the noted essayist James Salter plans to be present as well.
