Windows and Mirrors (a nod to Szarkowski's famed 1978 MoMA
exhibition) combines photography and works on paper which represent the
subjective and objective view of the world seen through sixteen works
by as many artists.
Todd Hido photographs a snowy street scene through the streaked
windshield wipers of a car while Birgitta Lund captures the blurred
forest through the window of a moving train. Bill Jacobson’s self
portrait is made opaque through his out of focus technique, resulting
in an image that suggests a glimpse into one's own past. Didier Massard's
photographs of his own life-like models manipulate the viewer's perception
of reality whereas Sarah Anne Johnson's toy-like sculpted figures
are created to be photographed yet not meant to deceive.
While some abstract reality, others focus on objective documentation.
Shai Kremer's, View of a Minefield, depicts what appears
to be an untouched landscape seen through a blown-out window. In Maira
Kalman's playful gouache on paper, two taxidermy rabbits seem to be
dancing with their mirrored selves. Hiroshi Sugimoto's darkened
theater lit solely by the screen through an exposure the length of the
film illuminates the room and suggests time passing while emphasizing
the isolation of the scene. The film screen serves as a window or mirror
and resurrects the screen to a new life.
